So why not 5 stars. This Denon (and the Oppo) won't play Blu-Ray disks, so they're definitely not future-proof. I own an earlier Oppo and it has performed superbly for over four years. Also, it cannot be "hacked" to watch foreign DVDs.
Well, it's a little overpriced. The instruction book makes a fuss about this player being able to display to PAL or NTSC, which suggests it should be multi-region capable, but I haven't managed to play my UK DVDs yet. As you'd expect, it has an HDMI output. Lastly, Blu-Ray players are coming down in price. All you're buying with this DVD player is a really good upscaling chip. The remote is fine and the selection of outputs is fine, too.
If you're interested in upscaling, this is pretty much your best option. There are better upscaling DVD players available, but they're not much better: Oppo makes a really good one (DV-981 or something like that). Please don't pay more than an Oppo for this. For this kind of money, you can buy a great Panasonic or LG player that will upscale a regular DVD and play a Blu-Ray disk in native 1080p. This is an extremely nice DVD player and it's really quite easy to obtain an upscaled picture on the TV. Remember that an HD-TV will upscale an image, too.
I got it on sale at Amazon a few weeks ago for less than a third of the MSRP.
The product looks great and works perfect. It came on time as well, neatly packaged and delivered as described
Moreover, it still has good audio qualities to deserve my recommendation. Althought it's not the best CD playback DVD player, together with Marantz DV6001, no other machine matches its video capabilities in sub $300 market. Taking into account the very low prices (discount), it's the best cost-benefit DVD player of the market right now.
